SCMA Meter Replacement Project

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Schuylkill County Municipal Authority is currently in the process of implementing a complete replacement of all 5/8” water meters in our system.

Why did SCMA decide to replace residential meters?

  • Upgrade our existing meters to new and efficient state-of-the-art meters.
  •  Accurately measure water usage.
  • Bring all meters into compliance with the Reduction in Lead in Drinking Water Act Requirements.
  • Limit the amount of unaccounted-for water loss in our water systems.

Why must my meter be replaced?

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) requires accurate metering of all drinking water and enforces regulations that are intended to limit the amount of unaccounted-for water loss in public drinking water systems. The aging residential meters have surpassed the design life where they are expected to accurately measure water usage within their original specified parameters.

What will this cost me?

  • The cost of the meter and installation will be borne by SCMA at no cost to the residential customer.

Will my water bill increase?

  • Your water rate will not change and there is no charge for the replacement of the meter, however, the new meter will accurately measure water usage within its original specified parameters. Conservation is the best way to limit any increase you may experience due to the installation of the new meter.

When will this work be performed?

  • The work will begin in July 2016 and continue until all residential and small business meters are replaced.

Will my water service be interrupted during the installation?

  • Yes, it is expected that the replacement work will require approximately 15-20 minutes to complete and will necessitate a short interruption in water service.

Who is doing the work?

  • The  Contractor for the project, Lenegan Plumbing and Heating Inc., has completed the installation work per contract requirements.  SCMA will now be completing the remainder of the installations until all required meters have been replaced.

Do I need to be home for the meter replacement?

  • Yes, appointments are necessary to complete the work.  Please contact Schuylkill County Municipal Authority office at (570) 622-8240 to speak with a customer service representative or email us at info@scmawater.com.

How do I know who is authorized to do the work?

  • The only personnel authorized to perform the meter replacement work are employees of Schuylkill County Municipal Authority.  All SCMA employees will have proper photo identification. If you have any questions concerning the validity of the employee, please contact Schuylkill County Municipal Authority at 570-622-8240.

Do they need to come inside my house?

  • To complete this project, the SCMA employee must gain access to the water meter, which is located inside your property, in order to replace the existing meter.

Do I need to prepare for the work to be completed inside my house?

  • It is important to access your existing meter in a timely manner. Please clear any items stored near your meter so the installation teams have clear and unobstructed access.

I own a business. Who do I call to schedule an appointment?

  • The only commercial meters that are included in this replacement project are small business water meters. If your business is included and you’ve been advised that your meter will be replaced at no cost, please contact Schuylkill County Municipal Authority at 570-622-8240.
